Heather’s short cut to charity cash for kids

French teacher raises money for Little PrincessTrust

A Perthshire woman has had her long locks chopped off to raise money for charity.

Heather Chapman (25) from Pitlochry was growing her hair long for her wedding last year, however wanted a new look and wanted to raise some cash at the same time.

The French teacher cut a whopping 13 inches off her hair, raising over £300 for the Little Princess Trust, a charity which make wigs out of human hair for children with hair loss.

Heather explained: “I started growing my hair around 18 months before I got married last July. I wanted to have the creativity and freedom for lots of up-dos.

“After the excitement of the wedding, I was a bit bored by having long hair, so cut in a fringe last September - this helped me feel ‘fresh’ for a while, but I knew I wanted to do something more radical.

“I’d heard about the Little Princess Trust from a friend back in Pitlochry - she’d done sponsored haircuts before.

“I asked her for more information, and she told me how easy it was. A few clicks on their website later, I found out that the minimum ideal donation is 12 inches.

“Once my hair stopped growing at 13 inches, it was time to book in the ‘big chop’.

Heather said she was not expecting anyone to donate to her charitable efforts.

She continued: “I decided to set up a JustGiving page as it costs around £350 for each wig to be made.

“I’m aware that the majority of my friends are still students or are just starting out in their careers with entry-level salaries, and mortgages and other scary adult things to be spending money on, so I thought I might get around £30, a few pity donations but no more.

“I shared my JustGiving page on Facebook quite a few times, and it worked!

“I had made £30 within the first week, and I made my ambitious £100 target with well over two weeks to go.

“A lot of people continued to give generously, and I’ve now made just over £300.

“I’m so happy that I’ve been able to do something so worthwhile with my hair - I didn’t need it anymore, and someone else can make much better use of it than me.

“I’m also enjoying the extra time in the morning after a shower!”
