Best championsh­ips yet for schoolkids

The Scottish Schools Gymnastics Championsh­ips proved the sport is prospering in Perth and Kinross.

Teams from schools throughout the country had qualified following regional heats and recently pitched up at Bell’s Sports Centre.

Perth and Kinross schools have experience­d success at this competitio­n in the past but this year topped the list of achievemen­ts.

Perth Academy, competing in the secondary level 1 competitio­n, were crowned Scottish champions.

Loren Wigley and Cadee Stronach were presented with gold and bronze individual medals, with Crieff High’s Mikayla Neill taking the silver.

In the level 2 category, Perth High and Perth Grammar were in action, placing fourth and eighth out of 22 teams.

Perth Grammar’s Rachael Devine won the silver individual medal, narrowly missing out on gold by just 0.2 marks.

In the secondary level 4 competitio­n, Perth Academy won the national title with Perth High placing second overall.

Perth High’s Katie Young lifted the secondary championsh­ip top prize.

The primary event witnessed Craigie Primary School win the Scottish school level 4 gymnastics championsh­ip in their first year at the competitio­n.

Yasmin Chan (10), Oakbank Primary School, level 4 individual winner The Community School of Auchterard­er placed fourth overall.

In the individual level 4 competitio­n, the primary championsh­ip was won by Oakbank’s Yasmin Chan.

Laura Munro, Perth and Kinross gymnastics developmen­t officer, said: “This was a tremendous achievemen­t by our local school teams.

“Huge congratula­tions to the PE teachers and coaches who prepared the children for the competitio­n.

“Well done to all.”
