Midfielder’s delight as his testimonia­l year begins

Millar celebrates Saints’ win against Rosenborg in Trondheim When Chris Millar decides to hang up the boots, he will look back on a St Johnstone career that has provided enough memories to last a lifetime.

Not many can celebrate spending a decade at one club in this modern world of football where loyalty often tends to play second fiddle.

Today marks the launch of the popular Perth midfielder’s testimonia­l year, sponsored by MKM Building Supplies, following a special 10-year service to the blue and white of Saints.

When Millar first walked through the doors of McDiarmid Park, back in 2008, he didn’t envisage carving out such a productive career.

“When you join a new club you don’t think for a minute you’d be here for ten years,” said Millar, who lists the club’s Europa League win in Trondheim against Rosenborg in 2013 as one of his main highlights.

“With the way football is, especially nowadays, you can’t take anything for granted but it’s happened and I’ve loved it.

“There have been a lot of highs and some lows, but overall it has been fantastic.

“Moving here was brilliant for me careerwise and when I finish I’ll look back and be proud that I was involved in the most successful spell in the club’s history.

“I don’t think it will really sink in how successful we have been until we’re all finished, to be honest. It won’t be until you look back on it that I’ll probably think ‘we were a decent side’ because when you’re wrapped up in it you are always looking forward.”

This is a Perth club that has handed recent testimonia­ls to defensive duo Dave Mackay and Steven Anderson.

For Millar, it proves McDiarmid Park is a place where players enjoy their work.

He said: “A couple of the other lads have had testimonia­ls and I think that shows

how good a club this is. It’s a great place to come and work. If you do well, you get new contracts and they look after you.

“When things are going well, like they have here in my time, then it’s easy to stay and be a part of it.

“As a footballer you try to be ambitious and try new things, so opportunit­ies come along now and again.

“The Australia thing was a possibilit­y and it was something I looked at. I had
