I’VE PLENTY TO PLAY FOR Cap-hungry Wotherspoon calls for big end to season
Pictured from left, sponsor Mark Longden from MKM, Chris Millar and Matt Henderson, chairman of the testimonial committee Wotherspoon has highlighted the importance of a strong finish for Saints Motivation will not be a problem for David Wotherspoon when the Scottish Premiership’s postsplit fixtures get under way after the break.
St Johnstone will compete in the bottom half of the table for the first time in seven seasons but the midfielder insists there is plenty to play for.
Wotherspoon is determined to impress both Saints boss Tommy Wright and Canadian national team head coach John Herdman.
The former Perth High School pupil made his Canada debut against New Zealand last month and is now targeting further international appearances.
“It’s nice to get a wee break now and a few days off to spend time with the family,” Wotherspoon explained to the Perthshire Advertiser.
“But I need to keep playing at St Johnstone and keep plugging away. Hopefully I can keep a spot in the Canadian team.
“The coaches watch everyone who is involved in the squad. The manager was very forward with me and was outspoken about what he wants to do.
“The next games are not until September so I will look forward to that. They will be important games for us.
“The trip away with Canada was an eye-opener and was one of the best experiences I have had in my life.
“It was an honour to play for Canada and everyone involved is now pushing towards 2022 for the next World Cup.
“There is a plan made out which is all positive. There is a real excitement about the camp.
“The boys were excellent with me and were very friendly. It’s a great bunch of boys.”
Saints, currently sitting eighth, look comfortable to remain in the Premiership but Wotherspoon says there will be no ‘end-of-season’ feel
