Scotland internatio­nal player will show trophy

Perthshire Rugby will be marking 150 years of the sport in Perth with the iconic Calcutta Cup this weekend.

The famous trophy — last seen when Scotland won their Six Nations game against England at Murrayfiel­d — will kick-off the annual beer festival and rugby sevens tournament on the North Inch on Saturday, May 12.

And to top it off, the famous trophy will be shown at the festival by a Scotland internatio­nal player from 2pm until 4pm.

Hundreds are expected to descend on the North Inch tomorrow for the festival, which will include live music and outdoor activities alongside the rugby sevens action to raise money for Perthshire Rugby.

Allan Brown, chief executive of the rugby club, said it is fitting to have the Calcutta Cup in Perth to mark 150 years.

He said: “We invite everyone Brewery Fergus Clark from Inveralmon­d Picture by Graeme Hart in our community to come along and see this fantastic trophy and a Scotland internatio­nal at our sevens and beer festival on Saturday.

“We’ve been playing rugby in the heart of Perth since 1868. It’s fitting that the Calcutta Cup will be present as we begin to celebrate our 150th year.

“The origins of the cup can The Calcutta Cup will be on show be traced back to 1872 when England and Scotland players played in Calcutta, only four years after our club was formed and the first game played on the North Inch.”

The fun begins tonight (Friday, May 11) with the Perth Comedy Night in the North Inch marquee.

A stellar line-up has been promised, with names such as John Moloney, Bruce Fummey, Garry Little and Jim Smith taking to the stage.

The bar for the comedy night opens at 6pm and there will be food on sale as well, before the first act begins at 8pm. A rugby sevens tournament will also be held
