Perth Theatre – the CATS whiskers?
Perth Theatre received six nominations and Pitlochry Festival Theatre was nominated for Peter Arnott’s adaption of The Monarch Of The Glen as Best New Play in the 2018 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS).
And to add to the excitement, Perth Theatre will host the prestigious awards ceremony on Sunday, June 10.
Three different Perth Theatre productions snapped up an impressive six nominations – all in the first season following its major refurbishment programme.
Mike Griffiths, Horsecross Arts’interim chief executive, said:“We are delighted to have so many CATS nominations in our first season back in the newly reopened Perth Theatre.”
Announced this week, the rural drama Knives in Hens is shortlisted in four categories, with Jessica Hardwick one of four actresses shortlisted in the best female performance award; Lu Kemp one of four in the running for the best director; Jamie Vartan and Simon Wilkinson for best design and the play is also shortlisted for the supreme award, best production, holding its own against three other nominations from Edinburgh teams.
Meanwhile, critics nominated Joseph Arkley in the title role in Richard III for best male performance.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre was delighted to get a CATS nomination for Peter Arnott’s adaption of Compton Mackenzie’s novel The Monarch Of The Glen as best new play.
Director Richard Baron said:“Although I have directed over 40 shows at Pitlochry, The Monarch Of The Glen is the first time I have had the pleasure of collaborating on a newly commissioned work with a living Scottish playwright.
“Peter Arnott’s astutely light-hearted adaptation of Compton Mackenzie’s 1930s Highland farce brought an enjoyable contemporary bite of sharp political satire to a script that was great fun to stage.”
