Rachel Redmond, left, as the maid Susanna in ETO’s Figaro Rachel Redmond is a Scottish soprano who will be with English Touring Opera when they perform The Marriage of Figaro on Thursday, May 17, for Perth Festival of the Arts.
She’s excited to bring the most warm-hearted of Mozart operas to Perth, where she will play the role of Susanna, the maid in Count Almaviva’s household.
Rachel said: “The Marriage of Figaro is a comedy classic, a great accessible opera where you can’t help laughing out loud.
“It has the kind of twists that catch people seeing it for the first time by surprise.
“If you don’t know what’s going to happen, you’re in for plenty of amusement as events unfold.
“And Susanna is a great character to play: she’s fiery, clever, believable and a ‘normal’ person, I find it easy to imagine myself in her shoes.
“She’s very close to her employer the Countess, and much of the story is taken up about how they plot together to reveal the underhand behaviour of the Count.
“Susanna has a very topical dilemma, the Count wants to sleep with her and she has to work very hard to avoid his amorous advances. In this production of Figaro we sing in English, and I think this really helps the audience appreciate the subtleties of the humour.
“We perform in traditional costumes and I can promise this is going to be a wonderful night at the opera with Mozart’s sublime music.”
The Marriage of Figaro is on Thursday, May 17, in Perth Concert Hall at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £25-£45 and school children can go along for £10.
There’s a pre-show talk at 6.30pm, for which you need to request a free ticket from the Horsecross box office.
