Relive the laughter and fun of Eric and Ern

- Melanie Bonn

The duo behind a riotous West End tribute to kings of British comedy Morecambe and Wise, is set to entertain in Perth. Eric and Little Ern was a hit in London after launching at the Edinburgh Fringe. And on May 24 Jonty Stephens and Ian Ashpitel, both dead ringers for the original funnymen, will perform An Evening with Eric and Ern.

For this brilliant homage they have crafted new material on the lines of Eric and Ern that seamlessly fits in with the real TV sketch scripts that had whole families in stitches.

Jonty recalled: “In the 1970s everybody finished what they were doing so they could sit down and enjoy Morecambe and Wise on the telly. It was a special time.”

Four years ago friends at a golf club asked actor Jonty if he could do an Eric Morecambe impression. He agreed, but needed an Ernie and asked fellow Birmingham drama school graduate Ian, his mate of 30 years if he could step into the comedy shoes.

That was the beginning of a lot of silliness for the friends.

An evening with Eric and Ern is a show crammed full of tremendous renditions of the sunshine comedy fondly remember from times gone by.

Ian Ashpitel was in Family Affairs and the TV drama, Mr Selfridge. Jonty has previously appeared in the smash-hit TV series Peaky Blinders and also lists roles in Minder and Jasper Carrott sitcom All About Me on an impressive CV.

“I’ve a fond connection with Perth,” he declared. “As a young actor I worked in Perth Theatre in 1985, and have happy memories of Joan Knight and staying at the Salutation Hotel. Yes, I do remember some late nights.”

Ian and Jonty will be laughing, dancing and singing as Eric and Ern at 8pm on May 24 at Perth Theatre.
