Find a one-off gem at arTay

- Melanie Bonn

The arTay tent is back at Perth Festival of the Arts, with an opportunity to view stunning paintings, ceramics, jewellery and furniture.

The painters and makers are the personal choice of Frames Gallery owner, Hugh Goring, and the result of a year scouting for established and emerging talent at major art shows in Edinburgh and beyond.

Hugh explained around 300 artworks will be on show at arTay from a mixture of some 80 artists.

He said: “I’m excited to be putting this together, you can visit the arTay tent on May, 17,18,19 and 20 and we are open from 10am to 7.30pm, in the plaza outside Perth Concert Hall.”

The mission of the big white marquee is to make buying an original painting a real possibility for everyone.

“You can spend as little as £50 on something that will be very special to you. The prices go up and there are pieces going for as much as £8000 but you get the idea,”said Hugh.

He’s pleased this year that Iron Fairy in Keltneyburn will be providing eye-catching metal sculpture tipped to be one of the arTay tent highlights.

Another name Hugh is keen to mention is Beth Robertson Fiddis from Ullapool.

He added: “I really like her work, we have it at the gallery in Crieff and I think her paintings will attract a lot of interest this year. Claire Harkess from Perth is a regular at arTay, we have some of her stunning watercolours. Last year was a big year for her, she won DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year in London.

“We have pictures by Frank Boag, a former teacher at St Columba’s in Perth who went back to art school and has become a hugely popular contemporary painter.”

So make a pilgrimage to see arTay and who knows what may come home with you.
