A plan to promote British Sign Language (BSL) in the area is to be introduced for the first time.

Perth and Kinross Council is looking to develop a plan to promote BSL and support those who use it as their first or preferred language in their day-to-day lives.

This is the first time the local authority has introduced a BSL plan, and now it is looking to gather views from members of the public.

The event will take place from 4-6pm on Monday, June 11 in the VisionPK offices in Perth’s New Row, and BSL interpreters will be on hand throughout the event.

Cllr Peter Barrett, convener of housing and communities at the council, said:“This is a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to come in and give their feedback on the plan and ask any questions they may have.”

A spokesperson for the local authority added:“The council is keen to hear the thoughts of BSL users and their families on how best to ensure people with BSL as a first or preferred language have equal access to council services and supports.

“The plan is in line with the Scottish Government’s BSL national plan 2017-2023 and the BSL (Scotland) Act 2015 which requires public bodies in Scotland to publish plans every six years, showing how they will promote and support BSL.

“The draft plan is also available to view online www.pkc.gov.uk/ media/42120/Draft-BSLPlan-2018-2024/pdf/ Draft-BSL-Plan-2018-2024”
