Cup win memories still sweet

-

The fourth anniversary of St Johnstone’s Scottish Cup win was marked by a great deal of reminiscing last week.

And for former defender Frazer Wright, a star performer on May 17, 2014, against Dundee United at Celtic Park, the memories will always remain.

The dominant centre-back – now assistant manager at Stirling Albion – said:“If you look at the Scottish Cup final pictures, the older ones were all together – myself, Dave Mackay, Chris Millar, Steven Anderson and Steven MacLean. We all appreciated it because we knew it was probably our last chance to win a major trophy.

“The camaraderie was brilliant. In that cup final, we all played the best we could play.

“Saints is a well-run club. They don’t pay the same wages as some other teams but they look after you.

“The group of boys we had back then made it harder to leave. Having a core group of us really helped.

“You knew you wouldn’t get away with anything. You weren’t allowed to slack so there was a good mentality in the dressing room.”

Another memory, Saints’ 2013 Europa League victory against Norwegian giants Rosenborg, will also be back at the forefront of Perth fans’ thinking this summer.

Wright netted the only goal of the game in Trondheim to secure a famous victory for the Perth club.

“That game was the start of a new era with it being Tommy Wright’s first game in charge,” Wright said.

“It kicked-off our season brilliantly, going out to win against a team like Rosenborg, who we had seen playing in the Champions League. And I was lucky enough to get the goal.”
