Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to a road crash near Dunkeld, in which a 96-year old man died.

Five people were also treated at Ninewells Hospital after the incident on the A9 between Little Dunkeld and Birnam on Tuesday afternoon.

The collision on Tuesday, May 22 at 2.30pm, involved three vehicles. A member of the public summonded emergency services.

Eight motorists were trapped after the smash.

Three individuals were freed before fire crews arrived.

Police refused to comment on reports yesterday that an elderly passenger in one of the cars involved had a seizure shortly before three cars were wrecked near the Hermitage.

Five injured people were taken to Ninewells hospital.

Strathtay councillor Grant Laing said the incident had been “absolutely tragic”.

He added: “My heart goes out to everybody involved, a very sad set of events on a sunny May afternoon.

“This all makes me think life really is for living. Being here is very tenuous. Everything can change in the blink of an eye.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday morning, Police Scotland commented: “A 96 year-old man sadly died. Next of kin have been made aware.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting 1994 of 22 May.”

It took six hours before the trunk road re-opened, with end of day hold-ups as people tried to return home after work.

Traffic was diverted northbound onto the A923 at Dunkeld and then onto the unclassified road south of Dowally signposted for Blairgowrie and Coupar Angus.

Southbound traffic was being diverted down this unclassified road and then onto the A923 at Dunkeld and back onto the A9.
