Perth HS wow audience at lunch concert Crowd entertained during musical hour at the kirk

A bumper crowd turned out to see talented young musicians from Perth High School perform earlier this week.

As part of Perth Festival of the Arts, pupils delighted the audience with a range of music spanning the years in the packed-out St John’s Kirk on Tuesday, May 22.

The lunchtime concert started patriotically with fourth year Krysztof Black and teacher Graeme Mulholland playing the bagpipes, including traditional tunes such as Highland Cathedral and Green Hills.

The school’s full orchestra then took to the stage to play a lively and upbeat tribute to Henry Mancini, including iconic tunes from the movies such as the Pink Panther.

Sixth year pupil Shona Rae then provided the highlight of the lunchtime concert on her bassoon.

The talented player wowed the audience with movement three from Mozart’s bassoon concerto, receiving a well-deserved round of applause.

Shona proved she had an endless amount of talent, by once again taking to the stage on her violin with fellow pupil Erin Hull.

The two led the school’s string orchestra in Bach’s baroque adagio for double violin concerto.

The string orchestra then jumped to Bollywood, playing a selection of songs from the hit film Slumdog Millionaire.

There were two choirs to entertain the audience, including the girls’ choir who sang I Believe I Can Fly and the mixed choir singing Coldplay’s Fix You, both accompanied by deputy head boy Sam McLellan on piano.

A small brass band then performed a rousing rendition of Summon the Sword which the audience clearly enjoyed. Pianist Sam McLellan was particularly busy at the lunchtime concert, and on top of accompanying a number of the bands, then took to the stage to perform a solo piece.

The audience was impressed with the sixth-year pupil’s take on Claude Debussy’s Deux Arabesque, with the sound of the grand piano filling the kirk.

Perth High School’s lunchtime concert ended with the wind band taking on Bernstein’s challenging West Side Story.

The American classic was a fitting end to a well played hour of music.

A number of other schools from across the region have been playing lunchtime concerts in the kirk as part of Perth Festival of the Arts, including Perth Academy, St John’s RC Academy, Glenalmond College and Perth Grammar School. violin in the concert audience Rachel Kennedy played the The school’s orchestra delighted the
