PSJ poised for cup final spot Saints supporters target British success

- Matthew Gallagher

St Johnstone supporters’ football team PSJ can book their ticket to the British Cup final this weekend.

The determined Perth fans, who play in the Internet Football Association league, face a last four clash with Livingston’s Livi GS.

New Central Park, home of Kelty Hearts, will host the fixture on Saturday as manager Graeme Doig sets his sights on silverware.

Rotherham await the winners in the final, which will be held down south later in the summer.

Doig said: “The excitement levels have been building over the past few weeks as we have maintained an excellent 10 game unbeaten run in the run up.

“This game will also count for the league campaign so we will be presented with the IFA Scottish League championship trophy at full time.

“The British Cup is always a competition we look forward to competing in.

“This season we have come through ties against Clyde, Bury - which included a last gasp winner down in Manchester - and Motherwell.

“We were runners-up in this competition last season and hope to go one better with the final arranged for Friday, July 6 in Nottingham.”

Matches between Saints and Livingston have been tightly contested through the years, with Doig expecting the same this time around.

“We face very good opponents on Saturday in Livingston GS,” he explained.

“They have won four of the last six league campaigns as well as the British Cup in 2014.

“They are an experienced team who know how to win big games and have got the better of us in two Scottish Cup finals in recent years.

“That said, over the last few seasons we have worked hard, had a consistent squad and gained a winning mentality.

“It keeps us going to the final whistle and this should hopefully put us in contention to get the result we all want on Saturday.

PSJ made the British Cup final last year and are on the brink of returning

“We beat Livingston 5-3 in the league last week which is a morale booster after we were on the wrong end of 6-1 score line earlier this season.”

The league victory against Livingston last weekend secured the Scottish trophy for PSJ.

“That win has secured the Scottish championship title for a second year in a row,” Doig said.

“We are nine points clear at the top of the British league and we play Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Cup final on Saturday, June 9.

“With all that in mind I would like to thank all our players and supporters this season for your commitment, hard work and determination.”

Saturday’s British Cup semi-final against Livi GS takes place at New Central Park in Kelty with a 9.30am kick-off.

Doig added: “It would be nice to see some Saints fans coming along to cheer us on, now St Johnstone’s season has finished.”

Live updates from the game will be posted from PSJ’s Twitter page.
