Branklyn’s blue poppy in the pink after win

-

A colourful plant grown in Perth has scooped a top gardening accolade.

The Himalayan blue poppy grown at Branklyn Gardens was awarded the first class certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society’s joint rock committee.

Also known as the Bobby Masterton, the blue poppy species was named after the creator of the Cluny House Gardens in Highland Perthshire.

The Perth garden has been described as“the finest two-acre garden in the country”and has become well-known amongst gardeners for its collection of meconopsis, or blue poppies.

Branklyn has five species and 25 cultivars on site of the blue poppy, which originated high in the mountains of Tibet, south-west China, Bhutan, Sikkim, Burma, India and Nepal. The colourful flower was brought back to the UK by plant hunters in the early 20th century and it has adapted well to the Scottish climate and the sheltered surroundings of Branklyn Gardens.

Jim Jermyn, head gardener at Branklyn, said:“This is a fantastic

The Bobby Masterton poppy at Branklyn Gardens accolade for the garden and we are proud to play our part in protecting this important plant collection for the love of Scotland.

“The plants are looking at their best at the moment. If you want to catch our award-winning Bobby Masterton, and our other beautiful blue poppies in bloom, it’s best to visit as soon as you can.”
