Coupar Angus

Abbey Church The service last week was conducted by the Rev Bill Ewart. Following a warm welcome, Mr Ewart reminded those gathered that God’s kingdom had already arrived, and that God was with everyone. The service opened with the hymn ‘We Are Here to Praise You’. In prayers, Mr Ewart asked the Lord to be patient when his people feel troubled or down-hearted, and give them patience to wait and put trust in him. In his all age address the congregation was told of a man – well-known to the guides – who planted apple seeds wherever he went. Growth was to be the theme for the service. The Bible readings, read by Jeff Brewer, were Psalm 20, which reminded people of the help God will give if they trust in the power of the Lord, and a passage from Mark chapter four, verses 26 to 34. This gospel reading included the parable of the mustard seed. Following the hymn, ‘The Kingdom of God is Justice and Joy’, to the tune of ‘Hanover’, Mr Ewart told of how he encouraged one of his grandchildren to persevere in learning to ride a bicycle, that the skills would become automatic without him even thinking about it. That is how Jesus works, making lots of things happen without people realising – often the occurrences that seem invisible are more powerful than the obvious. If you give love away, the more you receive. Often the love of God can be seen in the kindness of strangers, and we have all witnessed that on occasion. When people are feeling down or inadequate, they should trust in themselves and trust in God, as he will help them. Trust in the promises that comes out of the seed that God has planted in people’s hearts. God’s kingdom is like the mustard seed, little things are important, they will grow and overcome, showing the weakness of wealth and power. People must do their best, whenever they help someone in cash or kind, God will give them a hand. Mr Ewart encouraged them to trust in God and let God’s seed grow in their hearts. People should open themselves to his work. They are part of God’s field. Do good and God will do the rest, it will all happen automatically. Prayers of intercession were said for all who are involved in disasters and all who care for others. The service closed with the hymn, ‘I Am Not Ashamed to Own My Lord’. Organist Austin Wilkie played ‘Waltz in A’ by Arvids Zilinskis, ‘Air in D’ by Jonathon Battishill and a beautiful rendition of You Are Always on My Mind, played on the Yamaha Clavinova.
