Club competes for Cargill Quaich

-

Eagle-eyed members of Crieff Archery Club contested the Alex Cargill Quaich on Saturday.

The tournament, which took place at Crieff and Strathearn RFC’s Braidhaugh base, is now in its seventh year and was presented to the club by president Alex Cargill to mark its 20th anniversary.

The recurve contest takes the form of a‘Western’round.

Normally, this would include eight dozen arrows shot at 60 yards and 50 yards over the course of the day.

However, poor weather conditions meant the action was restricted to four dozen arrows.

The day also included shorter rounds for novice archers.

Libby Borrie performed the role of Lady Paramount and presented the prizes once play had concluded.

Afterwards, many of the archers went to the Meadows for a club meal.

Alex said:“The club would like to thank Libby for her help and also Duncan Murchie and Crieff and Strathearn RFC for their support and use of their facilities.”

The following day, Crieff club members Dee King, Thomas King, Alison Inger, Emma Borrie and Jim Clark all headed to Bannockburn Bowman Open which, despite its name, took place in Bridge of Allan.

In much better conditions, the men contested a St George round – over distances of 100, 80 and 60 yards – while the ladies’Albion round was shot at targets of 80, 60 and 50 yards.

There was also a short Windsor – over 60, 50 and 40 yards – for juniors and novices.

Crieff put in a stunning performance with Emma winning the Ladies’Albion with a score of 753.

Alison – who has only been shooting for seven months – smashed the Scottish record with 757 in the Ladies’ Novice Windsor, 42 points ahead of the previous benchmark, which was also enough to achieve what’s known as a first class score in archery circles.

Thomas was second in the Junior Short Windsor with a score of 529.

Jim and Dee shot well but just missed out on a medal.

Alison, Dee, Jim and Thomas picked up special Bannockburn Spider badges in recognition of their excellent performances.
