Sewing skills at Perth Theatre

- Rachel Clark

Liz McCafferty will run the courses over the summer Those wanting to brush up on dressmaking skills will be able to attend some crafty workshops this summer.

Perth Theatre will be hosting a number of sewing and pattern drafting workshops over the summer months, and both are perfect for anyone wanting to learn a new skill or expand on their existing techniques.

The theatre’s resident costume maker Liz McCafferty will run two week-long courses in July, including an introduction to basic sewing skills from Monday, July 16 until Friday, July 20 and an introduction to basic pattern drafting from Monday, July 23 until Friday, July 27.

Liz’s workshops are open to all levels of skill, and will take part in the theatre’s wardrobe department.

Liz McCafferty trained in fashion and throughout her career has been inspired by historical influences, leading her to study theatre costume at college.

After moving from Liverpool to Scotland, Liz became a wardrobe assistant at Perth Theatre in 1994 and currently lectures at Edinburgh College in pattern cutting, fitting skills and costume construction on the HND Costume for Stage and Screen and NC Theatre Design, Costume, Set and Props courses.

She said: “This is a first for the newly fitted out wardrobe department.

“The idea came about when the theatre re-opened, we thought it would be nice to use the space in different ways.

“I am looking forward to the workshops which will be a good introduction to both theatre and fashion avenues.”

The introduction to basic sewing skills takes place from 10am until 5pm each day and will look at using domestic and industrial machinery to sew. Participants will spend the week honing a range of sewing techniques to produce either a skirt or a pair of trousers.

Similarly, an introduction to basic pattern drafting will run from 10am until 5pm each day and look at pattern cutting methods and teach the creation of a basic body and sleeve block which can be manipulated into a style of choice.

To book a place on either workshop, call the Horsecross box office on 01738 621031.
