Broxden work is scrapped

Road open for weekend events

- Rachel Clark

Planned roadworks at Broxden roundabout this weekend have been scrapped.

This comes after motorists were stuck in hour-long queues tailing back along the M90 all the way to the Friarton Bridge last weekend.

Motorists complained of the nose-to-tail queues swamping the roundabout, which is currently undergoing £900,000 worth of upgrades.

Some residents even said it had taken over an hour for them to travel from Bridge of Earn to Inveralmond, a journey that normally only takes around 15 minutes.

Similar chaotic disruptions had been expected for this weekend as well, particularly as 30,000 people are expected to travel to Scone Palace to attend the popular Game Fair, which runs from today (Friday, June 29) until Sunday, July 1.

However, BEAR Scotland has announced it is to postpone this weekend’s roadworks to avoid a repeat of last weekend’s scenes.

A spokesperson for BEAR Scotland said: “Teams are making good progress on the £900,000 improvement project to upgrade sections of the A9 and M90 along with Broxden roundabout.

“The contraflow system planned over this weekend is being reprogrammed to take place later this year.

“This follows a review of the delays weekend Some drivers had to queue for nearly an hour last

noted from the past weekend and also taking account of anticipated traffic movements over this coming weekend. We are reviewing possible dates to complete this remaining phase of the surfacing improvements, and as with all our works, we’ll carry out consultation with the local authority and other affected stakeholders to ensure any concerns are considered before dates are confirmed.

“In the meantime, teams will continue to carry out overnight works this week on the A9 Broxden roundabout.

“As ever, we thank motorists for their continued patience while we work to complete these improvements, and encourage people to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up to date journey information.”

The roadworks continued this week, which included a number

of overnight road closures as well. However, the road will be open over the weekend and will allow motorists to travel straight through.

The news has been welcomed by Conservative MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife Liz Smith, who was critical of last week’s traffic build-up.

She said: “This is welcome news from BEAR Scotland considering the chaos caused by roadworks last weekend.

“Perth will be bustling with people as a result of the Game Fair and it is only right that these roadworks have been delayed.

“It’s just a pity that this common sense approach wasn’t taken last week. Everyone recognises that these roadworks are important, but it’s also important that congestion and disruption is kept to a minimum for travellers.”

An overnight closure between Craigend and Broxden ended this morning.
