John set to head up the Perth Show 2018 Farmer given top job
Ritchie of Montalt Farm is the chair for the Perth Show 2018 A Forgandenny farmer has been named chairman of this year’s Perth Show.
John Ritchie of Montalt Farm will head up the team charged with delivering the 156th show on the city’s South Inch on Friday, August 3 and Saturday, August 4.
As chairman of Perthshire Agricultural Society for 2018/19, John will steer a team of dozens of volunteers to put on one of the area’s most popular events.
A third generation farmer, John runs a 700acre upland farm with 750 cross ewes and 75 Salers cows.
The 36-year-old father of two said: “It’s a demanding task.
“Perth Show is a staple in everyone’s calendar so I’m keen to ensure this August’s event is a success.
“For generations, Perth Show has brought the farming community and the general public together to celebrate all aspects of the agricultural sector.
“From mainstream livestock and arable farming to food and drink production, country crafts and rural industry, education and machinery - it’s all at Perth Show and everyone has happy memories associated with the event.
“It’s a great honour to be chairman of Perth Show and if I can achieve anything in my year I would like it to be financial stability and strengthening of its agricultural core.
“This is a farming show and it’s important that we use it as a shop window for everything rural and agricultural.
“I’m only as good as the team around me, and I’m very privileged to have a strong, determined and dedicated group of directors and volunteers, donors and sponsors, officials and contractors who give up days - and often weeks - to ensure Perth Show 2018 will be a success.”
Each year, Perth Show draws exhibitors and visitors from all across Scotland.
And John reckons it is an ideal opportunity to get farming issues across to elected politicians.
He said: “We always invite and escort our local politicians and relevant government ministers if they are available.
“It’s important that they see how the farming industry is coping in these challenging times and hear first hand of the issues affecting our industry.”
And John is also looking forward to showcasing the area’s wealth of agricultural technology, heritage and skills.
“Many people don’t realise the vital link between agriculture and the food for their families.
“Perth Show literally takes visitors through the process from the field to the plate, letting people see how we rear and grow, process and create and finally refine livestock and crops to become the meal they all enjoy.”
