Travelling Shakespeare band awash with music

-

Highly rated up-and-coming Edinburgh band Gypsy Circus will be rocking The Loft in Perth tomorrow night.

And Saturday’s eagerly awaited early evening gig is supporting Perth’s Salle Ossian Fencing Club’s £20,000 fundraising drive to send competitors to the Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships in Australia later in the year.

The four-piece indie band features the husky vocals of lead singer Aaron King and Michael Mackay (guitar), Shaun Alderman (bass) and Calum Thomson (drums).

The Fair City appearance was added to their first Scottish tour, promoting new single ‘Obstacles’, and it will have a family feel as club members are joined by family, friends and music fans.

The Loft’s operations director Craig Fraser said: “We are delighted to support Perth Salle Ossian’s fundraising to send international fencers down under to represent Scotland.

“Gypsy Circus are a band that has been attracting a lot of attention and are definitely rated as one to keep an eye on.”

The evening includes a DJ, free entry to The Loft nightclub, raffle and fundraising silent auction. Doors are open from 7.30-8pm and youngsters over 14 are welcome until 10pm. A national touring company is coming to perform at Innerpeffray Chapel with two spectacular works by Shakespeare up their sleeves.

Five actors from The Three Inch Fools will present A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet on July 18 and 19,adding their own music for good measure.

The Wednesday performance is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the tale of runaway lovers, beguiling potions and an unfortunate individual who gets turned into a donkey.

Night two, on Thursday, July 19 will be Hamlet, Shakespeare’s masterpiece of loss and the supernatural, poetry and revenge.

The Three Inch Fools specialise in bringing Shakespeare to life through bold choreography and innovative sound in a way that is certain to delight and surprise.

Thanks to the work of awardwinning composer Stephen Hyde, original music plays a pivotal role in both of these productions, cleverly helping to elevate Shakespeare’s text from the page, and to recreate the same dynamic atmosphere that Elizabethan audiences would have experienced.

James Hyde, co-founder and director, said: “We want to show Shakespeare off to everyone and excite a whole new generation of The Three Inch Fools Shakespeare lovers to get to know his plays in all their vibrancy.

“Through our own high-paced performance style and musical talents we would say we have found our own unique take on Shakespeare.”

Over the years, The Three Inch Fools have performed in venues ranging from castles and cathedrals to Circus Gypsy bookshops and seaside piers.

They are particularly excited to be returning to Innerpeffray Chapel this year, and to be performing two of Shakespeare’s most well-known plays in such a beautiful historic location.

On top of great Shakespeare and high quality theatre, each performance at the Strathearn venue also includes something a little extra.

Audiences for A Midsummer Night’s Dream are invited to arrive early to indulge in afternoon tea, while audiences for Hamlet will receive a buffet supper. Both are included in the ticket price.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs at Innerpeffray Chapel on Wednesday, July 18 at 4pm (afternoon tea from 3pm), followed by Hamlet on Thursday, July 1 at 7.30pm (buffet supper from 6.30pm). Tickets for A Midsummer Night’s Dream cost £20, family £40, while tickets for Hamlet cost £25, or for a family £40.
