Drey delighted to be part of ambitious Saints set-up

-

Drey Wright at McDiarmid Park New Saints signing Drey Wright cannot wait to get going as the team prepare to depart for their preseason tour in Austria tomorrow.

The 23-year-old winger signed a two-year contract after spending six years at Colchester, where he made his professional debut.

Having spent his career so far at one club, Wright said the opportunity to challenge himself was something he could not pass up.

He said: “It’s exciting to have change because I have only been at the one club in my time playing so I’m really looking forward to a new challenge, to play in some big games.

“After speaking to the manager and the chairman when I came up here they are really ambitious.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

“My agent said there was a bit of interest from St Johnstone in January but we left it until the end of the season.

“I think it was about March when I got in touch with Tommy and things moved quite quickly from there.

“I came up, met him and signed the deal not too long after that so it was good.”

Drey said: “I started playing at Colchester at 17 and I had a couple of years out injured. They stood by me and the chairman offered me a new contract to prove myself.

“When the latest manager came I played pretty much regularly over the last two years, which has been pleasing because of the setback I had.”

Wright credited the support his family has played in his career so far.

He explained: “My dad use to play football and he’s been brilliant for me.

“He just said to me to go and embrace the challenge and the opportunity. It’s something I will be looking forward to.”
