Former teacher awaits sentence

- Court reporter

A former Tory councillor who ran concerts to support children’s charities was found with more than 200 indecent images and one vile video of children on his computer.

The video, discovered after police raided the home of 69-year-old Michael Jamieson, showed a young child performing oral sex on an adult male.

Police seized a number of USB sticks and hard drives after arriving at Jamieson’s house in Buchan Drive, Perth, armed with a search warrant in September last year.

And when the devices were examined by Police Scotland’s Cybercrime Unit, they found a total of 219 kiddie porn images, as well as one video.

The video, designated as category A, the most depraved, depicted a young boy, aged between five and seven, performing oral sex on the older man.

Officers also took possession of a total of 219 indecent, still images.

Of these, 55 were category A, which covers penetrative sexual activity, sexual activity with animals or sadism.

There were also 76 at category B, involving non-penetrative activity, and 88 at category C.

Jamieson, a former music teacher, was part of the Conservative-led administration on Perth and Kinross Council after being elected to the Perth City South ward in May of last year.

But he was suspended by the party following his initial court appearance last September and ordered to resign, which he did soon afterwards.

An ex-Rotary Club president and former secretary of Peform in Perth music festival, he pled guilty to two child porn charges when he appeared on indictment at Perth Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted that between August 8, 2014, and April 28, 2016, at his home, he downloaded the indecent images - and also had them in his possession.

He will be sentenced on August 20 after a background report and Tay Project risk assessment have been prepared.

He was freed on bail meantime, with a number of special conditions attached, including a ban on him accessing the internet meantime.

His name has also been added to the Sex Offenders’ Register and the length of time it remains there will be determined when he is sentenced.

Depute fiscal Carol Whyte told the court that Jamieson lived at Buchan Drive with his (female) partner.

A search warrant was obtained for the property which police executed on September 21, 2017.

The accused was represented by local lawyer David Holmes who will give his plea in mitigation next month.

Jamieson was elected to the council in May 2017.

He sat on a number of council committees including the lifelong learning committee and was also a member of the local authority’s licensing board.

He was a director of the annual Perth Festival of the Arts and was also associated with the Perth Youth Orchestra for a number of years and hosted the Instrumenal Music Service’s annual Christmas concert in support of the charity ChildLine.

He was secretary of the Perthshire Musical (Competition) Festival Association and was a trustee of the British and International Federation of Festivals.

Jamieson was also a two-time past president of the local Rotary Club of Perth St John’s and sat on the Perth common good fund Committee.

He previously worked for Perth and Kinross Council’s Instrumental Music Service and was also a stage manager for a number of touring organisations and carried out private teaching in percussion. councillor Michael Jamieson will be sentenced next month
