Coupar Angus

Abbey Church Sunday’s service last week was conducted by Rev Andy Graham, who welcomed everyone to worship on what was a beautiful morning and introduced the first hymn, ‘The Lord is King’ Prayers. This was followed by Rev Graham, who asked the congregation what they knew of Albert Einstein, apart from the theory of relativity. He said that being a profound thinker, Einstein was once asked what the most important question in the world might be and he replied: “Do you believe that we live in a friendly universe?” How does that impact on Christian faith when it is often said that fear and faith go side by side? Using the gospel reading Mark chapter five, verses 21-43, read by John Easson, Rev Graham explored the faith and fear of Jairus, whose daughter lay dying, and a woman who had been bleeding for years and had the faith to touch Jesus’s cloak to be healed. But was fearful that she would never be well again and accepted by the community. These two people used their fear to reach out to Jesus for help and had faith that He would help them. Jairus’s daughter was brought back to life and the woman was healed. In spite of all the bad things happening in the world, we must have faith and believe in a friendly universe, as created by God and revealed in his son. After prayers of intercession the service closed with ‘To God Be The Glory’. Organist Austin Wilkie played ‘Diapason Movement’ by John Stanley, ‘Only Just Begun’ by The Carpenters and ‘Recessional Voluntary in D’ by T Pattison. Sunday service at the Abbey Church is from 11.15am to12.15pm and everyone is welcome. The Abbey’s charity shop on George Street in Coupar Angus opened on Monday and runs until Saturday, July 14.
