Kirsty’s countdown to Euro challenge

Strathmore star set to represent Scotland in Sweden

- Matthew Gallagher

Perthshire golfer Kirsty Brodie is counting down the days until she represents Scotland at the European Girls Team Championships.

The Strathmore star will teeup at Forsgardens Golf Club in Sweden alongside the best young players the continent has to offer.

Kirsty (18) can’t wait to pull on the national colours again and build on recent good form which included a Stephen Gallacher Foundation Vase win.

She will be in action from July 10-14 and said: “I was extremely pleased to be picked to play for Scotland. It is a huge honour to represent your country.

“I was reasonably confident on being picked because I feel that I have played well this year.

“But there is always some doubt you might not get picked so I never get my hopes up.

“It’s completely different playing in the Europeans compared to playing in Scotland.

“The first year I went out I was so nervous and didn’t know what to expect.

“But going into the competition last year having been before I knew what to expect and was able to thrive on that.

“The standard of play out there is incredible. I had never seen such good golf before going out there.

“I’m really looking forward to it this year as it is my last so Kirsty recently won the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Vase and has now been selected for the Europeans PICTURE: KENNY SMITH

hopefully I can play well and mostly just enjoy it.”

The format of the event is one that appeals to Kirsty, especially when competition breaks away into matchplay.

“The event is two strokeplay rounds, then it goes into matchplay,” Kirsty explained. “The matchplay stages are the best in my opinion.

“The atmosphere is

completely different on the matchplay days as it’s all about your team and encouragement. It’s so much fun.

“I love the team spirit and love playing in a team.

“We don’t get to do it a lot in golf as it’s normally always individual competitions so it’s very exciting being in a team.

“I’ve heard the course is

beside the sea so hopefully that will work in our favour, being used to links and the windy conditions.

“We get to play two practise rounds before the competition starts so that helps a lot.

“And by doing this it means you can get a feel for the greens and see how the course is playing.”

Kirsty has been playing at

Moray in the Scottish Girls Amateur Championship this week and advanced to the matchplay section of the event.

“This week I have Scottish girls and winning recently has definitely built my confidence,” she said.

“So hopefully I can play well this week and continue that onto Europeans.”
