Wright’s challenge

is encouraging.

“We need to do that on Saturday, play at a good tempo and approach the game in the right manner.

“I was pleased with the quality of play, work rate, tempo and attitude on Tuesday.”

Tony Watt’s performance was a big positive for Wright.

“I was really pleased with Tony and he probably wanted to play longer. But I’ve got to be careful,”said Wright. “He hasn’t played a lot of football and I’ve got to make sure I get a full season out of him.

“The last thing I want was to play him an extra 15 or 20 minutes and then something happens to him.

“You can see that he appreciates what is around him on the pitch. Technically he is a very good player.

“I think McMillan loved playing with him - I think anybody would love playing with him.”

Trialist goalkeeper Dean Lyness and full-back Mark Russell were both in action for Saints on Tuesday.

Wright said:“The trialists did well. Mark Russell is quite easily identified as a footballing left-back. He loves to get on the ball and will bring the ball out.

“I would like to make a decision on everything by the end of this week.”

Wright also confirmed a couple of clubs have shown an interest in taking striker Callum Hendry on loan.
