Flags to celebrate economic past
Colourful guildry flags are flying high in Perth city centre.
The flags were put up along George Street on Thursday last week, to mark the opening of a brand new exhibition at Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
George Street is now lined with the flags, which represent the different crafts and merchant guilds of the city of Perth, and lead up to the museum at the end of the street.
The exhibition is called‘By Hammer and Hand’, and explores the guilds of the city from its medieval origins to the present day.
The earliest records of the Guildry Incorporation of Perth date back to 1452.
The guildry maintained trading standards within the medieval burgh, and made sure all merchants complied with their strict rules and regulations.
Visitors to the museum will be about the crafts and merchants that made Perth, by drawing together significant objects, artwork and archives on the city’s economic history.
All of the city’s ancient trades will be represented at this new exhibition.
By Hammer and Hand is free to attend and will run at Perth Museum and Art Gallery until Sunday, September 30.
