Miss Perth is gearing up to set up her very own pageant in the Fair City.

Megan Darlington (20) recently competed in the UK Power Pageant, and now wants to set up her own beauty pageant for residents in Perth and Kinross.

A total of five beauty queens from across the region will be crowned at the very first “Miss Tay” next year.

Megan hopes the pageant will boost women’s confidence and raise some money for local charities at the same time.

She said: “It is all about getting local people together and giving them the experience that I got without having to travel further afield, and having a bit of fun.

“When I first thought about it people told me about the old Fair Maid of Perth, so I thought why not bring it back with a different name - Miss Tay.”

The competition will have five different categories, including junior miss (11 to 14 year olds), miss teen (15 to 18 year olds), Miss Tay (19 to 27 year olds), Ms Tay (women over 28) and Mrs Tay (married women).

Megan continued: “There will be five crowns up for grabs and there will be three rounds for the contestants.

“I don’t want it to be too extravagant so I don’t want to have a swimwear round, because I don’t think it is always needed.

“There will be a jeans and a white top round, so people don’t need to worry about entering the competition.

“There will then be fashion wear which will be a bit of fun, and then we will finish up with evening gowns.

“I will be getting judges from other competitions up to Scotland for it as well.”

Although Megan has yet to find a suitable venue for the competition, as she wants somewhere that has a stage and a dance floor, she is hoping the pageant will take place next spring.

She also hopes this will be a great opportunity for the community to raise money for local charities.

She explained: “I am volunteering at the moment at Kinfauns RDA. It has got a great set up and it helps so many local kids.

“So the pageant will be for charity - at the moment I am thinking Kinfauns RDA and another one. It is all about giving back to the community.

“Hopefully this will also encourage contestants to go and do their own volunteering and charity work.

“I want people to see the contestants of Miss Tay and be inspired by them. It is not about being fake and loving yourself, it is about what you can give back to people.”

She continued: “I am really looking forward to it. It will be a challenge, but spring is far enough away to get it all done.

“There are not many younger people entering at the moment, but hopefully that will pick up and it will encourage them to come and do bigger pageants with me.

“The winners will get a crown and be able to go on to do bigger events. It will give them a great opportunity and a year of having fun with the title. “I will take the winners under my wing to start off with. “I am hoping this will happen the following year as well, so I hope this year will be a success.”
