The centre-back played the full game in Saturday’s Betfred Cup opener against East Fife which finished without score.
Excitement was often lacking at McDiarmid but Saints held their nerve to pick up a Group B bonus point by winning the penalty shoot-out.
Gordon knows maximum points should have been recorded but is sure the performance level will rise throughout the competition.
He would love to be challenging for silverware this campaign and said: “I think the Betfred Cup is very good and we’re taking it very seriously.
“You want to do well in the cup and get into the next round.
“The format helps ahead of the league campaign because you’re getting plenty of 90 minutes into you.
“It’s not just a friendly, it’s competitive, so you are getting that edge in early which is only a good thing.
“We’re speaking about it amongst ourselves and we want a good cup run.
“We got to the quarters last year but haven’t gone on a real run since the Scottish Cup win. It would be great for the fans and the whole club.”
