Growers’ get radio spot

- Melanie Bonn

A group in Dunkeld truly living the Good Life in the middle of their town got a feature on BBC Radio Scotland last Thursday.

The Field community growing project in Dunkeld was the subject of the lunchtime feature‘Let’s Grow It, Cook It, Eat It’, presented by gardening expert Nicola Singleton.

Each week, during the peak of Scotland’s growing season, the programme comes from a different community garden in Scotland, providing a seasonal celebration of how sharing space, food and skills can grow stronger, healthier communities.

Nicola was in Dunkeld to gathering ingredients from the hugely productive Highland Perthshire plot, which is planted and managed by local volunteers. Now growing in the organic plots are 8,000 onions and about 5,000 leeks, plus asparagus, carrots, lettuce and broad beans.

She met trustee David Roberts, who explained about how 2011 was The Field’s first growing season.

Volunteer Ginny Carlton chatted about the camaraderie she’s found in the community garden and local celebrity chef Flora Sheddon cooked up tempting produce for lunch.

The Field has a regular

The ingredients of Saturday’s organic produce stall in Dunkeld stall in the town square on Saturdays and on Tuesdays in Birnam now that produce is coming in thick and fast.

The half-hour programme can be heard on the BBC I-player Radio for the next three weeks.
