Manblocked policecar

-

A Blairgowrie man stood in front of a police car, blocking its path, and then climbed into the back seat and asked officers to“lift him.”

And when they initially refused to comply and he was removed from the vehicle, 22-year-old Kelvin Campbell called them“mongols.”

The accused, who was bare chested and had a bleeding nose, then had his arrest wish granted.

He was handcuffed and put back in the car. But he then kicked out twice at PC Darren Petrie, connecting once.

Campbell, who had been freed early from a previous jail term, was ordered to serve the outstanding 15 weeks of that sentence when he appeared at Perth Sheriff Court.

He will then be dealt with for the drink-fuelled incident which took place in Blairgowrie’s Myrtle Park on July 1 this year.

He admitted acting in an aggressive manner, shouting and swearing, standing in front of the police car and then assaulting the officer.

Depute fiscal Carol Whyte said officers had been conducting inquiries in Myrtle Park and got into their car when these were concluded.

“The accused then appeared and stood in front of the vehicle, stopping it from leaving.

“He then opened the back door, got in and asked the officers to lift him.”

After shouting and swearing at them, he was advised he would be arrested.

PC Petrie was struck on the left leg by the first kick - the second missed - but he didn’t suffer any injury.

Solicitor Paul Ralph said:“As a sober young man, he’s able to hold down employment and keep himself out of trouble.”

Unfortunately, when he had a drink he was“another person”and took part in“nuisance behaviour.”

There had been a“gathering of friends”in Myrtle Park that evening for a drink but words had been exchanged.

Imposing the 15-week jail term, Sheriff William Wood said:“You were released on June 1 as a matter of trust but committed this offence some four weeks afterwards.”

Campbell will return to court on September 12, shortly before his release, when a community payback order will be considered for the Blair incident.
