Boys are sent packing

- Rachel Clark

A number of scouts have been sent home from a major event in Perthshire.

Eight scouts were sent home in from the annual Scout Jamborette last week after allegedly taking drugs.

The group were allegedly found with cannabis at the event, which is currently taking place in the grounds of Blair Castle, Blair Atholl.

Over 1000 scouts from across the world are currently at the 10 day long camping event in Highland Perthshire.

However, once drugs were discovered, eight members of the jamborette were sent home, with two being charged for the offences by Police Scotland.

A 17-year-old male was charged and given an official warning for possession of the drugs, with a 16 year-old male being charged with supplying the cannabis.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland’s Tayside division confirmed that the two boys were charged for the small amount of herbal cannabis.

They said: “Police Scotland can confirm that it attended at an international South Jamboree event in Blair Atholl on Thursday, July 19 in response to a report of drugs offences.

“After enquiries were conducted, a 17 year-old male was charged and given a recorded police warning for possession of controlled drugs, and a 16 year old male was charged and is to be reported for supplying controlled drugs.”

Scouts Scotland, the body who organises the Scout Jamborette, said that they needed to send the eight scouts home because they take a “zero tolerance” approach to drugs.

A spokesperson for Scouts Scotland said: “We can confirm that eight scouts have been sent home from the Blair Atholl Jamborette.

“Scouts Scotland has a zero tolerance policy on narcotics use and this matter has been reported to Police Scotland.”

The jamborette has been held at Blair Castle every two years since 1946, with scouts travelling to Highland Perthshire from as far away as Japan, Zambia and Canada, with overseas visitors treated as guests of the Scottish Scouts.
