Milne full of respect for pal Camilla

- Matthew Gallagher

Camilla Hattersley Stephen Milne admits it was a special experience to grow up competing alongside fellow Perth swim star Camilla Hattersley.

Hattersley recently announced her retirement from the sport following a career which included appearances at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

The Fair City pair both attended Perth Academy and were often named in Scottish and British teams together.

“It was special because we went through school together,”Milne said. “Camilla was in a lot of my classes at school.

“The lifestyle of an athlete, maybe a swimmer in particular, is getting up early to go to training and doing homework during lunchtime.

“It was sometimes napping in class when we were really tired!

“It was nice that I had somebody to share the experience with.

“I wish her all the best, she’s had a great career and it was great to be team mates with her as a senior and a junior.”

Hattersley trained at Perth City Swim Club in her younger years before moving on to join Glasgow University.

Milne continues to put in the hours at the local leisure centre with coach Ann Dickson.

“Considering the size of the club, Ann does a great job,”Milne said.

“She is working with me doing the senior side of things, which is pretty much full time, and runs an age group club.

“Not many other coaches are doing that and it is unbelievable the amount of commitment she has.

“And the rest of the volunteers in the club too.

“We wouldn’t be able to run the club without them.”
