Local GPs take on Spartan Race for charity

- Robbie Chalmers

Staff of a Perth GP are to channel their inner warrior and take on the Spartan Race in September in aid of charity.

Six employees of the Whitefriars Green Practice Surgery will take part in the five-kilometre sprint race in Kinnoull on Sunday 16 September in order to raise money for muscular dystrophy, a condition that is very close to home.

Dr Lesley Cormack is one of the staff members taking part and she also came up with the idea to race.

She said:“We decided to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK as someone close to us at the practice has recently been diagnosed with this condition.

“As a team we decided to enter the race and raise money for the charity to show our support.

“I participated in the Cancer Research 10 kilometre race in Edinburgh last year as part of my ‘get fit and lose weight’resolution and after enjoying it so much I was keen to embark on another challenge this year.

“I am also a fairly new partner to the practice so keen to I thought it would be a good idea to do something different for the staff from the usual team bonding challenges. Dr Steve Elliott, Dr Julia Hamilton, Dr Leslie Cormack, Jo Elliott, Laura McPhail and Demi Angus.

“This race provided a good challenge so some of us could get fit training for it but ultimately it was chosen as it is a local race and provides us with a chance to have some fun, challenge ourselves and hopefully raise money for charity in the long run.

“We thought this was a big enough challenge as we only realised what was involved after signing up – climbing ropes and monkey bars are our enemy.”

Lesley is joined by Dr Steve Elliott, Dr

Julia Hamilton and receptionists Jo Elliott, Laura McPhail and Demi Angus for the challenge.

In preparation, three of the group have taken their training methods to the next level.

Lesley said:“Myself, Dr Hamilton and Jo Elliott have all joined up to the British Military Fitness classes at the Inch.

“So every Thursday after work we are out there sweating our socks off.

“We have to say thanks to Steven

Green at BMF for training us as some of us are in a rough state of fitness.

“But a month in we are starting to see some results.

“Apart from that everyone is just working away on their own trying to improve stamina and strength.

“No specific diets, either just healthy eating or becoming more active. The good weather has definitely helped.”
