The talented group of students from Perth College UHI were awarded with ‘sporting blues’ awards by the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association, which aims to recognise sportsmen and women who have performed exceptionally well in their sport.

Fergus Sandison and Alfie George were both awarded the college’s ‘full blues’ award.

This comes after Fergus, who has just completed his BSc (Hons) sport and fitness degree, represented Scotland in the men’s indoor hockey team at the European Championships earlier this year.

He said: “it is a great honour to have my sporting achievements recognised in this way by the university, as the

Fellow ‘full blues’ winner Alfie George, who studies NC business, is also part of the British Cycling’s junior academy.

He said: “I am very proud to win this award in recognition of my sporting activities, it shows how studies and sport can be combined and highlights the University of the Highlands and Islands’ interest in sporting pursuits as well as academic ones.”

‘Half blue’ awards were also dished out by the students’ association.

Toby Carter, who studies NC sport and fitness, received the half blue award for representing Great Britain at the junior under 20 world cup fencing championships in Paris and Dormagen, Germany.

He was the youngest member of the senior men’s sabre team as well, who were selected to represent Scotland in the 2018 senior five nations fencing championships, held earlier this year in Cardiff.

He finished this fencing season as number one in Scotland in the senior men’s sabre rankings.

Toby, who is looking forward to the upcoming junior Commonwealth fencing championships in Newcastle, said: “Being recognised by the Highlands and Islands Students’ Association by being awarded a half blue for my efforts and successes in fencing means the world to me.

“I have only be able to compete at the level and frequency that is needed to allow me to achieve what I have due to the understanding and support of my lecturers who I would like to thank very much.”

And finally, an honorary blue award was given to swimmer Stephen Milne from Perth. The award was given to the Olympic medallist and former student of Perth College UHI for his “outstanding achievements”.
