Wright’s men stroll into Betfred Cup knockout stage

- Matthew Gallagher

David McMillan is surrounded by team-mates after putting Saints 2-1 ahead Forfar ............................ 1 St Johnstone ................. 3 It was a blustery afternoon at Station Park but St Johnstone refused to be blown off their Betfred Cup course.

Perth players showed their character to bounce back from an early scare to top the group and advance to the knockout stage of the competition.

Forfar, who would have jumped above Saints in the standings if they won, were certainly not giving their place up without a fight.

And they gave home supporters something to get excited about after only 16 minutes when John Baird guided home the opener.

But goals from Tony Watt, David McMillan and a stunner from Matty Kennedy secured what was ultimately a comfortable victory.

Watt, whose glancing header pulled Saints level before the break, is feeling sharper with every kick of the ball.

“It was good to get the 90 minutes. I’ve been building up to that for the last three or four weeks,” Watt told the Perthshire Advertiser.

“It was a good win for the boys and Matty and David both scored good goals. We’ll look to build on that again next week.

“I’ve felt sharp but I needed that 90 minutes. I’m happy with that and hopefully it can continue.

“Obviously I can still do a couple of things better when I’m fitter but that will come. It’s always going to come.

“It’s easy to gel together when you’re playing with good players. Now we’re hopefully going to show everyone how good
