Local firms star in taste awards

Keith and Sheila Mitchell have added several more stars to their bakery product range A group of Perthshire producers will soon be able to brag about being awarded great taste Awards, with the distinctiv­e stars displayed on their product packaging.

the 2018 star ratings have just been released and charcuteri­e, chocolate, shortbread and honey seem to be the trailblaze­rs in taste this year.

Kenmore Bakery, a regular gt winner, has two stars for its Kenmore shortbread and a further one star for each of the following: Kenmore Bakery scottish Oatcakes, the Miller’s Crunch biscuits and its stem ginger tablet.

In Aberfeldy, thyme to Eat is celebratin­g being picked out for its smoked shetland beef pastrami (one star), lemon curd (two stars), plus the farm’s rare breed large black pork sausages (one star).

Organic dark chocolate makers Chocolate and Love, registered in Perthshire, pulled in six new great taste Awards and the newest flavour, Pomegranat­e 70 per cent, won two stars.

richard O’Conner, co-founder and internatio­nal head of sales, said:“We are delighted to have won six awards for our chocolate bars, which means all our nine variants have now been awarded great taste Awards, so we’ve clocked up a total of 29 great taste Awards.”

Perthshire butchery brand simon Howie Foods picked up one star for its smoked back bacon and another for producing a tasty veggie haggis.

House of Bruar’s butchery department was applauded for its Aberdeen Angus sirloin steak with a one star award.

Buzzing with flavour, Heather Hills Farm got two stars for its French chestnut honey, strawberry jam and one star for spanish lavender honey and another for its scottish heather comb honey.

Errol-based Cairn o’Mohr got credit for working with wild elderflowe­r, taking a star for its Braes o gowrie sparkling elderflowe­r drink and elderflowe­r wine.

Botree Farm in Bridge of Earn sources pepper from Kampot in Cambodia.

this region’s export is the only pepper in the world to have attained Protected geographic Indication (PgI), similar to Champagne, Cognac or stilton Cheese.

Botree Farm’s organic white Kampot pepper is the latest in its range to get a one star award.
