Talks could pave way for Crieff museum

-

Discussions are taking place with a view to opening a new museum in Crieff.

Local man Bobby Salmond is chair of a working group attempting to bring the project to fruition.

He said:“While this is probably still two years away from becoming a reality, it is a good news story for Crieff.

“This will be an exciting venture, using modern technology to tell the story of both Crieff and Strathearn”.

Ann Cowan, a former Strathearn ward councillor, said she has been gathering ideas and support since retiring.

A final decision on the venue for the museum has yet to be made but Mrs Cowan added:“There is much to consider, and what to choose from the huge amount of history and drama which has unfolded in the area over the centuries.

“There is still evidence of the Roman occupation and the importance of Strathearn at that time.

“The Picts were in evidence too during the Roman period, and for several hundred years afterwards.

“The first Earl of Strathearn was created at least 1000 years ago and much flowed from his important influence. Then later on we have the turbulent history of the Jacobites with their terrible battles and burnings.

“We know a little about the excitement of the Drovers arriving in Crieff with their thousands of Highland cattle – this is a very big and unique story for us.

“We then have the development of mills using the abundant water in the area, and later the arrival of the railways – which, in turn, led to the popularity of Crieff as a tourist destination”.

The group is holding talks with Culture Perth and Kinross and other groups in relation to the potential museum.

Members are holding a series of introductory events to consult with the public and to ask for support.

The first of these will be during Crieff Country Market in James Square on August 11.

The project has been backed by keen local historian Colin Mayall and politicians, including Ochil and South Perthshire MP Luke Graham and Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Liz Smith.
