Driver who hit teenager is traced

- Douglas Dickie

A driver who knocked down a teenage girl in Perth earlier this week has been traced by police.

The 14-year-old was crossing Crieff Road near McDiarmid Park just before noon on Monday when she was struck by a small, grey car.

The driver then stopped his car about 50 yards away and actually got out, but then incredibly drove off without checking on her welfare.

Thankfully, the school pupil escaped serious injury, but she has been left shaken by the incident.

Police officers have now confirmed the driver has been traced and enquiries are continuing.

The victim’s mum told the PA she hoped the driver should have stopped to check on her.

She said:“We appreciate it was an accident, just one of those things and she shouldn’t actually have been crossing there.

“But I feel the guy should have stopped and checked on her welfare, that’s just common decency.

“I don’t know what he was thinking. Maybe he thought because she had got to the side of the road she was ok.”

The teenager is recovering well having suffered from a bump on the head, bruises and whiplash and she will be fine to start back at school next week. The incident happened on Crieff Road

She was with a friend when they were crossing the road.

The mother said:“She doesn’t remember much if it. We’re just relieved it wasn’t worse as it’s such a busy road.

“She said she thought the road was clear and had looked both ways.

“She’s a bit shaken up by it. Both of the girls got a big fright and I think she realises how lucky she has been.

“She was a little bit embarrassed at the start but she’s had a lot of encouraging messages from her friends.”

Police Scotland is appealing for information about the incident, which took place around 11.50am on Monday, August 6 on Crieff Road.

A spokesperson for the police said: “Traffic was particularly heavy at the time, and this incident would have been seen by a number of motorists and pedestrians.

“The injured girl was trying to cross the road, so it may not have been initially apparent as to what had happened to those passing by.

“Anyone with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting CR/19030/18, or speak to any police officer.

“Alternatively if you have any information about the incident you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers 100 per cent anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via their anonymous online form at crimestoppers-uk.org”
