All set for University challenge

-

Jeanfield Swifts will face another new experience this weekend when they travel to take on Heriot Watt University.

The Alex Jack Cup first round clash takes place in Edinburgh and boss Ross Gunnion has his players set for more success.

Swifts have secured victory in their opening three competitive games since moving to the East of Scotland League set-up.

Heriot Watt will compete in the Conference C alongside the Perth side when league action kicks-off next week.

Gunnion said:“Heriot Watt will present a different threat to the first three games we’ve had this season.

“The team will be young and full of energy but that can also bring a little bit of inexperience.

“The coaching staff will have them well drilled and organised so it’ll be up to us to try and break them down.

“I think getting them early in the cup let’s us get a feel for the type of team they’ll be.

“But there is also an argument to suggest they will maybe be stronger in a month or two when more students start to return to university.”

While Gunnion has been delighted with Swifts’start, he reckons there is another level still to be reached.

He said:“The early cup games have allowed us to get more game time in the legs of the players and let them adapt to our style of play.

“Hopefully that’s benefited everyone. The energy levels and attacking play has been very impressive at times.

“But I think we are still some way off the finished article and getting a performance for 90 minutes is still to come.

“Hopefully we can build up again on Saturday.”
