A paw-fect bar to hang out in

Dog meet-ups at The Green Room

- Rachel Clark

Dogs and puppies are becoming a regular feature in bars, restaurants and hotels across Perth and Kinross.

Since Katie McCandless-Thomas and her beloved pet Baxter set up Dog Friendly Perthshire last year, the idea of inviting pet pooches in with their humans has taken over the region.

Over the past few months, fourlegged friends and their owners have been meeting up regularly thanks to Dog Friendly Perthshire at events such as dog-friendly cinema screenings at Perth Playhouse, fundraising walks and ‘puppies and prosecco’ at The Green Room.

And ‘puppies and prosecco’ proved such a hit, there are now weekly pet meet-ups in The Green Room with ‘pups in the pub’.

The group meets every Wednesday at the city centre bar, and wants to encourage more dog lovers to come and join them.

Katie said: “It consists of two parts, the first a walk around the South Inch.

“The first week four puppies came along as well as older dogs and they all had an absolute ball running riot with each other.

“It was nice to seem them playing and it was a good opportunity for us dog owners to have a chat and get to know each other better too.

“The second part of the evening is dogs and their humans heading to The Green Room for refreshments.

“There are plenty of water bowls and biscuits for dogs and for us humans there is a well stocked bar if we want a drink or two!”

Since setting up Dog Friendly Perthshire, Katie has been on a mission to identify and promote pubs and cafes that welcome dogs inside.

The Green Room has since become well known for having canines chilling out by the fire or enjoying the music.

Katie continued: “We hope these Baxter, beloved dog of Katie McCandless-Thomas Picture by Dog Friendly Perthshire weekly ‘pups in the pub’ meet ups are another way which we will help continuing strengthening the wonderful dog community we have here in Perthshire.

“The Green Room is a fabulous dog friendly pub too. They hosted our ‘puppies and prosecco’ party where over 70 dogs attended so their welcoming, friendly, dog loving staff love their doggy patrons.”

The Green Room is now also looking into hosting dog birthday parties as well because of the success of being dog-friendly and hosting events such as the ‘pups in the pub’ meet ups.

Those wanting to join the weekly events can meet at 6pm on a Wednesday evening at the Sir Walter Scott statue in the South Inch for the walk.

The group will then head to The Green Room on Canal Crescent for 7pm.
