Striker keen to grab the glory from deflected shot

Tony Watt celebrates St Johnstone’s opener in front of the Hibernian support St Johnstone ................. 1 Hibernian ..................... 1 Tony Watt is adamant St Johnstone’s opening goal against Hibernian was his.

The McDiarmid Park forward’s deflected first-half hit nestled in the top corner but confusion reigned as to whose name was going down on the scoresheet.

Suggestions of a Ryan Porteous own goal were quashed by Watt in the aftermath of Sunday’s Premiership tussle in Perth which ended 1-1.

Oli Shaw levelled the contest in the second half with a stooping back post header but a point apiece was a fair outcome.

Watt said: “One of the first discussions we had when I got back in the dressing room was about that goal– and it’s NOT an own goal.

“I’ve struck it towards the back post and I think it’s going on target and it hasn’t really changed direction. It’s my goal.

“I saw them give it as an own goal on Sky Sports but Willie Collum came up to me after the game and said ‘it’s your goal’.

“That’s gone in the referee’s report, so that should be enough to sort it. Nobody is taking it off me.

“I need to score as many goals as possible this year and the bottom line is if I don’t hit the shot, it doesn’t go in.

“The Hibs fans were giving me a bit of stick a few minutes before that, so I thought I’d just stand there and stare at them – just a bit of banter.

“Fozzy [Richard Foster], another guy that winds them up, was on my back celebrating so it was enjoyable. More than that, it’s a really good point to get on the board.”
