Return of Glen of Rait games

-

Pipes and drums will fill the games field Rait Highland Games returns for another year next weekend.

The eighth Glen of Rait Games will be hosted in the Carse of Gowrie hamlet on Saturday, August 25.

The games have been held since 2004, after residents in the area discovered it had been a local tradition over 300 years ago, when the Old Pretender and his supporters gathered at the nearby Fingask Castle.

Traditions such as appointing a provost for the day for the royal procession, and ladies’pass the parcel (originally done to keep the plague at bay) are still done today.

Graham Nicholson, vice-chairman of Rait Community Association and master of ceremonies for the day, said: “It really is a fantastic day for the whole community.

“The build-up and the day itself see a great community spirit with villagers and other locals coming out in force to support the day.”

This year youngsters Issac Milne and Hannah Fitzpatrick will perform the roles of provost and lady provost in the royal procession from the village hall to the games field, where they will officially declare the games open.

Entertainment will be provided by Inspire Dance Studio, Carse of Gowrie Pipe Band, and accordionist Billy Anderson, with stalls selling local goods, a raffle, bottle stall, beautiful pet competition, barbecue and beer tent.

The royal procession from the village hall starts at 1pm with gates on the games field opening at 12.30pm.

Entry costs £5, children £2.50 and under fives free, and includes an afternoon tea.
