Bogus workmen warning

- Rachel Clark

Police officers in the area are appealing for information after bogus workmen targeted an elderly couple in Crieff.

The elderly couple were doorstepped by workmen offering to do work in their garden on the town’s Victoria Terrace on Monday, August 6.

However, the workmen did only some of the work promised and then carried out extra jobs, before demanding more money from the couple.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland’s Tayside division said: “Police Scotland is appealing for information about a bogus workmen-type incident which happened in Victoria Terrace, Crieff, on Monday, August 6.

“An elderly couple were doorstepped by workmen offering to do work in their garden. Some work was then undertaken, with extra jobs which had not been agreed, before the workers pressurised the victims into paying more money than had been agreed initially.

“While it is unlikely anyone has directly witnessed this incident, we would like to hear from anyone in that area who has had people at their door offering to do gardening or similar work, and who may have been forceful or overly persistent in their manner.

“People carrying out this kind of scam can be very convincing and may appear to be genuine, often with professional-looking business cards or pamphlets with a company name or contact number

“Remember that any genuine firm or workman will take no for an answer, and will not pester you or persist in trying to get your business. If anyone comes to your door that you are unhappy with or think is bogus, call 101 and let us know.

“If you have any information which you think could assist us in our enquiries, please call 101 or speak with any police officer. Our reference is CR/19189/18.”
