Perthshire GP takes top position
A Perthshire doctor is set to lead Scotland’s GPs as the chair of the British Medical Association’s (BMA) Scottish GP committee.
Dr Andrew Buist from Ardblair Medical Centre in Blairgowrie has now taken up the position, after serving as deputy chairman of the committee since 2006.
He has been a GP in the eastern Perthshire town for 25 years, and graduated from Edinburgh medical school in 1987.
Ahead of his first meeting as chair of the committee, Dr Buist said: “It is a privilege to be elected to lead Scottish GP committee at such an exciting time for general practice.
“Having been involved in the negotiation of the 2018 GP contract in Scotland, I am keen to build on this and ensure that we maximise its potential to reduce the workload pressures on GP recruitment difficulties that many practices have been facing.
“Key to this is ensuring that additional investment and resources are available so that GPs can do what they do best - working as expert medical generalists, providing continuity of care to their patients close to home.”
Dr Buist took up the position officially yesterday (Thursday, August 23), and will continue to work at his Blairgowrie practice throughout his chairmanship.
Dr Alan McDevitt, a Clydebank GP, will continue to serve as a member of the GP committee after stepping down from the top position. Dr Andrew Buist
