Recruitment driveforclub

Blustery conditions and choppy water did not stop new faces from making a splash with Tay Rowing Club.

A special session aimed at former rowers interested in returning to the sport, held on Saturday, has been hailed a success.

The club, based on the outskirts of Perth and formed in 2015, is on a recruitment drive to encourage ex-rowers who want to get back on the water.

Club member Mel Nicoll, who has recently returned to rowing herself, was thrilled to welcome a large crowd to the day of fun-filled action.

Back on dry land club members laid on a barbecue and gave an overview of the club’s development plans, including the prospect of a purpose-built boathouse, for which planning permission has recently been secured.

Mel said: “We would be delighted to hear from other former rowers who might not have heard about the weekend’s event and who are keen to get back on the water too.”

Training takes place on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, with Wednesday evening sessions during the summer months.

Indoor training sessions are also being added to the programme this winter as the club continues to grow.

This autumn will see members racing at several events including Loch Ore, Aberdeen and Newcastle, and off the water at the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships at Ravenscraig in November.

The club has a range of boats, sweep and scull, in varying sizes, meaning that at most sessions several different crews can be found on the water.

Names can be taken for“Learn to Row”courses, which are held at regular intervals for complete beginners.
