Car hits a schoolboy going home on bus

Roadside horror for Breadalbane pupils

- Melanie Bonn

Children returning home from school in Aberfeldy had an agonizing hourlong ordeal aboard their bus on Tuesday, after a pupil was hit by a car as he got off.

A senior Breadalbane Academy student was taken to Ninewells Hospital after he was injured as he climbed off the school bus at his stop at Camsernie near Dull.

The incident happened at around 4pm on Tuesday, when the 15-year-old was knocked down by a car passing close to the stationary bus.

Police are investigating what happened.

The pupil sustained head injuries, but remained conscious and talking to paramedics.

The route to Rannoch, Fearnan and Fortingall was shut for three hours children were asked to get off the bus and wait at the roadside while the driver and other motorists tried to make the injured teenager comfortable until help arrived.

The road - the B846 from Aberfeldy to Fortingall - was closed and did not reopen until 7pm. Some parents waited to meet the bus, unaware what had happened.

Thankfully the boy was released from hospital the following day.

The primary and secondary children who had been at the scene of the accident were offered support when they returned to school on Wednesday.

A Perth and Kinross Council spokesperson said: “The thoughts of the council and the Breadalbane Academy school community are with the pupil and their family for a speedy recovery.

“Arrangements were made to transport the other pupils on the bus safely home afterwards, and support was made available at the school for any pupils who had been affected by what happened.

“We would also like to thank the emergency services for their rapid response.”

Breadalbane Academy expressed relief about improvements in the boy’s condition on Wednesday: “We are delighted to say that our senior pupil who was involved in a road accident yesterday will be discharged from hospital later today.

“Our whole campus community has been given a huge lift by this news and we wish him a very speedy recovery.”

The school is looking into how to minimise an event like this ever happening again. It has agreed there will be more information on what parents should be saying their children on road safety and how to get off the bus. The bus company is to be asked to state its responsibilities and expectations and Breadalbane Academy will be supporting the community council and their great work so far on traffic and speeding in and around Aberfeldy.
