Disappointing Aberdeen trip for the Saints women

- Matthew Gallagher

Poor decision making was to blame for St Johnstone Women’s weekend defeat against Aberdeen, boss Jason McCrindle believes.

The Perth side endured a disappointing afternoon in the northeast and went down 4-1 at Aberdeen SportsVillage.

“We knew it would be tough but we didn’t play as well as we could,”McCrindle explained to the Perthshire Advertiser.

“We did well in spells but, when you go to Aberdeen, you need to play well for longer periods of time.

“They hit us with balls over the top and their striker was able to get on the end of it.

“We needed to stop the supply and we didn’t do that. We didn’t get close enough to them.

“After watching the game again, we were comfortable on the ball at times but the goals we lost were down to poor decision making.

“There’s the international break this weekend so that will allow us to get back in and get working.”

The Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 standings have bunched up in recent weeks with Saints now placed fourth.

But McCrindle insists his players will continue to look up, rather than the chasing pack behind.

“We’ve got five games left and we obviously want to win them all,”he said. “We could end up finishing second, but also sixth.

“That is how tight the league is. We want to improve on last year and anything above fifth would be a bonus.

“But, where we are at the moment, if we were to finish anywhere below third then it would be a bit of a disappointing season.

“We’re looking forward rather than looking behind us. If we focus on ourselves, then I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

McCrindle hopes to welcome more younger players into the squad in the closing stages of the season.

He said:“Once we look as though we’re almost safe, we will look to introduce a few younger players from Jeanfield under-15s.

“Hopefully, we can get them up and promoted to the senior side if and when they are ready.

“There will be one or two players from the development team, too, looking ahead to next year.”
