Patricia feels like ‘different person’ since signing up

Patricia Lomond, 53, started her Fair Start Scotland journey mid-May 2018.

And in her own words says: “Within two weeks, I was a different person.”

Patricia has a number of recognised barriers to work including depression and arthritis, not to mention a truly challengin­g life story.

In recent years, she has dealt with end-of-life care for her father, managed her way through her own cancer scare, had other close family bereavemen­ts and provided much needed support to her daughter and grandchild­ren.

Having worked previously with adults with learning difficulti­es, Patricia has a genuine desire to return to this area of work, but she recognised that without support she would not be able to move forward with this goal.

Patricia uses words like“confidence” and“courage”and notes that engaging with Fair Start Scotland has been a really positive influence on her life.

This is clear in the fact that she has already had her first job interview, where she came a very close second, and is now even more determined to get the job at her next interview.

Working one to one with her Fair Start Scotland Adviser, Sandra Murphy, has been a real benefit to Patricia.

She said:“I feel so relaxed with Sandra; like I could tell her anything.

“She’s a great support and I enjoy my regular meetings with her.”

Through Fair Start Scotland, Patricia has been provided with a range of support including ICT sessions, where she is the star pupil according to tutor, Duncan.

Sandra has also had support with updating her CV, researchin­g and applying for jobs and developing an action plan that shows a clear direction of travel for Patricia as she looks for a job that she wants.

Fair Start Scotland Adviser, Sandra explains:“Patricia has had many challenges in her life from personal health concerns to family matters and really big personal issues.

“Her resilience and positive attitude are really quite something; I’m so impressed by her and just how far she has come.”

Stirling Council – Area Profile

In 2017, Stirling Council had a total population of 94,000

60,800; 64% of residents were of working age; between 16 and 64 years old.

Between April 2017 and March 2018 44,600 residents in Stirling were in employment.

This is an employment rate of 73.6%, which is slightly below the national average of 74.3 per cent.

In 2017, there were 4,800 workless households within Stirling.

As of June 2018 Stirling Council, had a total of 1,455 residents claiming out of work benefits.

Please note Under Universal Credit a broader span of claimants are required to look for work than under Jobseeker's Allowance.

As Universal Credit Full Service is rolled out in particular areas, the number of people recorded as being on the Claimant Count is therefore likely to rise.

In November 2016, 3540 residents in Stirling were claiming, ESA or Incapacity Benefits.
