Scottish record equalled by Crieff member

- Johnathon Menzies

Talented members of Crieff Archery Club gathered for their annual outdoor tournament on Saturday.

Braidhaugh was the venue as participants shot using an ‘American’ format, which sees archers fire 90 arrows at targets 60, 50 and 40 yards away – with a maximum possible score of 810 points.

Organisers have said that some outstanding scores were recorded in conditions which were described as ideal for the sport.

One of these came in the form of Alex Cargill notching 792 on his way to claiming the overall compound crown.

The total is equal to the Scottish record for the American format.

Emma Borrie won the recurve title with 710 points, while Thomas King scored 528 – which was enough to receive the prize for the junior age category.

Prizes were presented by Roisin Butcher, who performed the role of Lady Paramount for the day and was joined by her mother Rose.

Among the awards was the Nick Butcher Handicap Trophy, which was gifted to the club in memory of Rose’s husband, Nick, who was the club’s vicepresident.

This cup – which was won by Alex Cargill with 1456 points – is now shot for annually by members of the club.

Alex, also the club’s president, said: “We would like to thank Crieff and Strathearn RFC and Duncan Murchie for their ongoing support for the archery club and allowing us to use the grounds at Braidhaugh, and for the use of the pavilion for the club’s activities.” Other results were as follows: Best gold - Alex Cargill (compound), Emma Borrie (recurve), Alison Inger (novice).

Gents recurve - 1 Stuart O’Donnell (595), 2 Dave Smith (446).

Gents compound - 1 Alex Cargill (792), 2 Allan McDougall (788).

Ladies recurve - 1 Emma Borrie (710), 2 Dee King (582), 3 Alison Inger (569).
